Art & Language

14.10.2009 to 10.01.2010

For the first time in the Nordic countries Art & Language will implement a unique work at EMMA

Art & Language was born in Coventry at the end of the 1960s when a group of university art teachers and graduates sought critical alternatives to the prevailing idea of modern art and artists. In all some 50 British and American artists have participated in the implementation of classic conceptual art.

Since 1977 the Art & Language core figures have been the artists Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden and the critic and professor of art history and theory Charles Harrison who have create the unique work now on view at EMMA.

Art & Language held a key role in creating conceptual art theory and
practice. It was also instrumental in introducing the still ongoing process
in which the concept of art has expanded beyond traditional art objects and artists have adopted new forms of working which take a critical view of the art institution.

The exhibition has been curated by the Finnish writer and critic Timo
Valjakka
